Most rescue Italian Greyhounds are already housebroken. The age of rescue dogs ranges from under one year to ten years. Though, puppies are rare in shelters. Adopting an adult dog has its advantages. Italian Greyhounds have gone through a puppy stage and you get a well-mannered dog that is quick to adjust to your situation. Older dogs do not need a great amount of time devoted to socialization and housetraining.

The Italian Greyhound is a sight hound. These dogs should always be kept on a leash, or be in a fenced area, as their keen eyesight and great speed can get them into trouble. Italian Greyhounds are not outdoor dogs. They cannot tolerate cold temperatures and should kept warm and dry. Both parents of the Italian Greyhound puppy should have CERF certificates for eyes and be screened for luxating patella. Other health problems in Italian Greyhounds can be poor teeth, low thyroid, seizures, and Legg-Perthes disease.
Italian Greyhounds are sensitive to anesthetics. Their extremely thin skin ought to be provided with proper care. Until Italian Greyhounds reach the age of about eighteen months old, their bones are rather fragile. All in all, Italian Greyhounds are sturdier than they seem.
